A story of kings and war
Stirling is unmissable. Built upon a steep hill, it rises high above the surrounding landscape, with the impressive Stirling Castle at the apex overlooking it all.
And this place is just as important as it looks: once known as the “key to Scotland”, epic battles were fought and kings were made here.
It’s in the city’s well-preserved old town, which looks to have been unchanged for centuries, that most of Stirling’s rich history is found.
Around the old town
At 11 am, you’ll meet with your group and your charming guide to begin your hour and a half tour around the old town of Stirling.
It all takes place outdoors, so you’ll get plenty of fresh air and exercise while you learn!
During that time, you’ll pass by iconic Stirling Castle, a magnificent fortress that has felt the presence of royals like Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
You’ll also see the Church of the Holy Rude, and awe-inspiring old parish church, as well as nearby Stirling Cemetery with its striking Martyrs Monument.
There are certainly some interesting stories attached to these places that you’ll be told all about.
You’ll go by Stirling Old Town Jail as well, a grim Victorian institution that locked up many terrible criminals in its day.
The old town has so many fantastic historic buildings, so getting a guided tour around it and learning all about them is a great idea.
