Visit Tretower Court and Castle for one of the best things to do in Powys for families

A massive circular tower built by Roger Picard II, the striking building became known as Tretower - or, 'the place of the tower'.

With four storeys and nine-feet-thick stone walls, the architectural wonder wasn't built just for protection - and it stands tall today, just as remarkable as it was 900 years ago.

With a monumental tower just as notable and powerful as the Picards' presence, Tretower is two wonders rolled into one. Across the castle green lies an entire medieval court, created by Sir Roger Vaughn, before abandoning the property shortly after 1700, leaving the landscape to become host to a series of tenant farmers.

Tretower was in a sorry state when it was bought to the nation in 1934, with conservation effort lasting four long decades. Original fabrics were saved whilst modern replicas replaced pots, pans and furniture that didn't survive the renovation. Combined with glorious wooden roofs, impressive woodwork and eye-catching artwork, the history of Tretower is still very much alive today.

Visit Tretower Court and Castle and explore one of the most rewarding discoveries in Wales.
