What's On at Preston Manor and Gardens?

A former manor house in Preston village, Preston Manor is now part of the wider Brighton and Hove area. The house was privately occupied until 1932 when it was given to the Brighton Corporation by its longest-serving family, the Thomas-Stanfords.

The Manor has now been transformed into a museum and exhibition space, documenting upper-class life during the Edwardian period for the world to see.

  • Explore a Grade II listed building that’s been fully restored to it’s Edwardian heyday
  • See furnishings including period pieces and collections from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Discover one of the most haunted buildings in Britain, with reports of ghost sightings dating back to the 19th Century.
  • Gardens: Discover Brighton’s beautiful green spaces filled with unexpected pleasantries! Afterwards, head over to the unusual graveyard, featuring a Pet Cemetery hidden in the corner.
  • Entrance Hall: Be greeted by family portraits and fine furniture as you enter the Manor! The best furniture was placed here to make an important impression on visitors.
  • Dining Room: Built in 1905, the Dining Room captures the spirit of the original Georgian  House.
  • Cleves Room: Best known for hosting a séance in the 1890’s, the Cleves Room is the most haunted room in the building, with stories, mysteries and burials to be uncovered.
  • Drawing Room: The Drawing Room was a luxurious retreat for the Lady of the House, used to entertain guests before and after dinner; today, you can see elegant furnishings, Chinese vases, a pair of Louis XVI candelabra’s and more!
  • Bedrooms: See photographs of family members, beds, furniture and so much more, as well as a recreation of the exact wallpaper chosen by Ellen Thomas-Stanford.
  • Servant’s Quarters: Reflecting the reality of Victorian and Edwardian life ‘below stairs’, gain a fascinating glimpse into life during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
