Step back in time as you walk through 125 years of turbulent history inside "Scotland's Toughest Jail"
Peterhead Prison is a must-see for anyone taking a trip to Scotland and has an interest in its history and wild stories.
You will be taken through the halls and corridors of the former ''HM Convict Prison Peterhead'', the only ''convict prison'' in Scotland.
The museum highlights the work of the brave personnel that served there between 1888-2013. You will get to see what 'real' prison life was like. Listen to the officers speak about all their experiences as you walk through this once active and hostile environment.
Inhale the weight of all its history as you enter the laundry, shower block and hospital areas. Walking through this prison will hit all your senses.
The Prison's History
When the prison was used, prisoners were sentenced to penal servitude. This is when convicts were made to do hard physical work as part of their punishment.
As part of the experience you will see the cells, halls, kitchen, laundry, barbershop, booking-in area, and shower block. After this you will then learn about the ''A Frame'' - an awful punishment used to give inmates 10-20 of the ''lash'' from 1888 to 1939.
The tour includes audio headsets as well to talk you through everything. They last around 1 hour and 30 minutes - to 2 hours, however, there are no time restrictions, so take your time and discover this amazing piece of history at your own pace.
Above the hospital on the upper floor sits the Refuge Café. Here you can take refuge in their gorgeous Scottish-themed café. Overlooking the harbour and town of Peterhead, enjoying some tasty treats, sit back and reflect on your fantastic trip to Peterhead Prison.
