Why this Plymouth aquarium is a great day out in Devon...
The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the UK's National Aquarium. Situated on the shores of Plymouth Sound, in the heart of the city’s famous Barbican district, it is an incredible attraction to visit all year round.
The National Marine Aquarium is the UK’s largest aquarium and is home to over 5,000 marine animals, including sharks, rays and a very cheeky turtle!
Are you ready for a journey across the ocean?
The attraction is cleverly laid out so that you begin your journey in the local waters of Plymouth and end up in the Great Barrier Reef.
At the start you’ll be mesmerised by what beautiful creatures can be found just a stone’s throw away from our coast. The further you journey through the aquarium, the further across the ocean you travel meeting animals of all shapes and sizes.
Delve into a world of seagrass and say hello to its most charismatic residents – seahorses. Discover what life is like in the vast Atlantic Ocean, and we just know you’ll love the Ocean Drifters – a zone totally dedicated to the wonders of jellyfish. You’ll feel like you’re on another planet among these alien-like, beautiful creatures.
You complete your journey in the tropical seas of the Great Barrier Reef. A 650,000-litre tank pulsating with the most colourful life on our planet, this exhibit is astonishing. Take a seat in the cinema-like auditorium and marvel at the beauty of the ocean. It’s the perfect spot to just sit, relax, capture the moment, and take it all in.
All National Marine Aquarium tickets come with a complimentary annual pass, so you can come back as many times as you want in a year, completely free of charge.
So much more than an incredible aquarium attraction
The National Marine Aquarium is home to the Ocean Conservation Trust. These folks are the real deal – a charity passionately dedicated to protecting the Ocean through community engagement and habitat restoration. They believe that to protect nature, you need to start with people, which is why the Aquarium goes beyond a great day out. 100% of profits raised through admission tickets, café and retail sales go directly to the Ocean Conservation Trust.

How to get here
By Car:
The National Marine Aquarium is located in the Coxside area of Plymouth. Follow the brown and white fish signs, which can be found on all entry roads into the city.
The recommended route is via the A38 to Marsh Mills (Sainsbury’s) then along the A374 Embankment Road. The route for the Aquarium and Sutton Harbour Car Park (main parking for the Aquarium) is signposted from here.
You can find the National Marine Aquarium via Sat-Nav at the address: National Marine Aquarium, Rope Walk, Coxside, Plymouth, PL4 0LF
By Train:
The walk from Plymouth Train Station takes around half an hour. A lovely walk through the city, you’ll journey passed the university campus and then we’d recommend walking via Plymouth Hoe to the aquarium – the lighthouse is iconic, and you can take in the full view of the harbour and the famous Drake’s Island.
Not up to the walk? There’s a handy taxi rank just outside the train station.
