Ever wanted to explore a part of Welsh heritage?

On the border of Wales and England, you’ll get to see some amazing history and beautiful scenery at Monmouth Castle, one of 26 surviving castle sites in Monmouthshire.

It’s centrally located just off one of Monmouth’s main shopping streets, making the castle easy to spot as you drive through the town centre.

We suggest leaving the car at Glendower Car Park, a five-minute walk away from the castle to make your day here smooth and enjoyable.

But whether you come with the kids or a group of friends, your experience at Monmouth Castle will leave you feeling inspired and wanting to learn more about the past events that happened here.

What happened at Monmouth Castle?

The history of Monmouth Castle goes back to the 11th-century when it was built by William FitzOsbern, shortly after the Norman invasion.

A prominent event was the birth of Henry V in 1387. More commonly known as Henry of Monmouth, and mentioned in three of Shakespeare’s plays, the future king was born in a tower above the gatehouse.

As you’ll see from your adventure, the castle was lucky to go somewhat unharmed by the Glyndwr Rising, which was the last big attempt for Welsh independence.

Later in the 17th-century, the castle changed hands on several occasions before being disregarded by Parliament. A girls’ school and the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers headquarters called Monmouth Castle home some years after.

How about a delightful pit stop for lunch?

There are lots of lovely pubs and restaurants just a stone’s throw away from the castle. We recommend pulling up a pew at The Punch House, a one-minute walk across the street.

Choose from their delicious menu of traditional pub classics with a glass of wine as you reminisce on what you’ve experienced at this fascinating castle.

If the sun comes shining, why not set up a spot for a bit of alfresco dining by the castle? Pick up a tasty treat from one of the nearby bakeries, or even bring some of your favourite snacks from home with a cosy picnic blanket – something to make your time at Monmouth Castle extra special.
