Founded in 2011, the Hay Castle Trust is a registered charity dedicated to preserving this historic site and ensuring its future as a hub for cultural enrichment, educational activities, and community enjoyment.

The vision behind the recent renovation of Hay Castle was to restore this beautiful building, making it safe and accessible for current and future generations, and establishing a vibrant cultural space in the renowned Book Town of Hay-on-Wye!

  • Enjoy daily tours, this is a fantastic opportunity to see behind the scenes of this unique and historic building. Tours run daily at 11am and 2pm! Tours cost an additional £5 on entry and take about 45 minutes.

Hay Castle's Medieval Roots

Local legend tells us that Hay Castle was built in a day - an amazing feat even for the best Norman castle builders. Not only that, it was also built by a woman called Matilda, a giantess who hurled a stone across the Wye on completing her 24 hour construction marathon!

The lift gives access to all floors apart from the cellar (the film in the cellar is also on iPads in the Reading Room).

There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor near the café and a further one on the first floor.

Your canine friends are welcome on the ground floor and in the café as well as in the grounds. Please do keep dogs on a lead at all times.

Yes! Hay Castle Café is situated on the ground floor of the castle. With large windows that overlook the lawn and flood the café with natural light, offering a light and airy space to enjoy brunch, light lunches, cakes and snacks.
