By Rail: 400m/440yards, Shrewsbury-Machynlleth/Pwllheli route

By Bus: 200m/220yards, route No 3, Porthmadog-Criccieth/Pwllheli.

By Bike: NCN Route No.8 On route.

  • The visitor centre has two levels, the ground floor is a shop and admissions area, and the lower ground area is an exhibition space. The lower ground area can be accessed via a couple of steps or using the accessible platform lift.
  • The pathway leading up to the castle is around 70 meters and very steep with around 10 staggered stone steps spread out. A handrail is available on part of the pathway.

Yes, dogs on leads welcome to access ground floor levels of the site. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times.

Criccieth Castle does not have a car park, however parking is permitted on the road around the castle.

Smoking is not permitted at Castell Cricieth. 

The castle was first built in the 1230's by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, the prince of Gwynedd. The castle was captured by Edward I in 1283, where it underwent significant change. 

Criccieth Castle was besieged and damaged in 1294-1295 during an unsuccessful revolt by Madog ap Llywelyn. It was then captured after being burned and heavily damaged in another revolt attempt led by Owain Glyndŵr. 

JMW Turner famously painted Criccieth Castle sometime between 1835-1836.
