Richard II is charismatic, eloquent, and adored by his friends. Yet, he is a disastrous king—dishonest, capricious, and politically inept.

This age-old dilemma echoes through the centuries: how to handle a ruler with an unassailable right to rule who is determined to ruin the nation he governs.

Shakespeare’s nuanced, ambiguous, and beautiful play captures feudal England on the brink of modernity, as a divinely sanctioned monarch faces the pragmatic realism of true authority in the form of Henry Bolingbroke.
